Clinic of Gastroenterohepatology is a unique institution in Republic of Macedonia, obtaining necessary health care in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology for more than two million inhabitants.

As a part of Internal Medicine Clinic we celebrated the 60th anniversary in 2006, but as an independent department we are working from 1976 y.

Providing specialist consultations and adequate medical treatment on in- and outpatients basis is our main goal.
Around 20 thousand patients pass through our units every year. With a capacity of 54 beds, we admit around 1700 patients per year, with a median hospitalization of 8 days. 
As a public health care institution, our services are provided through 6 different units, which are highly specialized according latest medical achievements.
Three of the units are for in- patients including intensive care-unit, one is ambulatory, and the rest are endoscopies and ultrasound units. The latest are divided in subunits for upper and lower endoscopy (upper and lower ultrasonography), for diagnostic and interventional procedures (endoscopic and sonographic).
Using this kind of organization, we succeeded to provide all the necessary investigations of the digestive system, and to treat different health conditions.  The services we provide are the following:

1. Real-time ultrasound (US) of abdominal organs
2. Duplex and color-Doppler US of abdominal vessels
3. Diagnostic punctures and biopsies under US control
4. Drainage procedures of different collections in the abdominal organs/cavity
5. Biliary drainage procedures
6. Biliogastrostomy, cystogastrostomy procedures, applying endoprosthesis under US control.
7. Percutaneous ethanol injection sclerotherapy of small tumors under US control
8. Upper and lower endosonography
9. Upper GI Endoscopy, Duodenoscopy
10. Upper endoscopic biopsy, polypectomy
11. Endoscopic hemostasis of upper GI bleedings
12. Endoscopic extraction of foreign bodies
13. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (diagnostic and therapeutic)
14. Sigmoidoscopy
15. Colonoscopy
16. Lower endoscopic biopsy, polypectomy
17. Rubber band ligation of hemorrhoidal bleeding
18. Ambulatory 24 hours pH-metry
19. Application of enteral and parenteral nutrition

In the Clinic of Gastroenterohepatology due to this broad spectrum of procedures, on ambulatory basis, every year are done around 10 000 ultrasound investigations, more than 5000 gastroscopies, around 1000 sigmoidoscopies and more than 1000 colonoscopies.
The number of interventional procedures under US guidance (biopsies, drainages, endoprosthesis application) approaches 1200, and the number of procedures under fluoroscopic control (ERCP, endoprosthesis application) reaches 350. Endoscopic therapeutic procedures, like polypectomies or endoscopic hemostasis, reaches number of 300 pts per year.

Besides the extensive clinical practice, our department is part of the Medical School of "St.Cyril and Methodius University", so we are included in the permanent education of medical stuff. It means that we participate in theoretical and practical education of nurses, technicians, radiologists, medical students and doctors. Apart from that we organize on regular basis, different meetings, workshops, courses and gastroenterology schools on different levels.

We are successful in investigation and treatment of the diseases, as well in permanent education, due to our stuff, which consists of 79 people:

21 medical doctors, among them 8 professors, 2 assistant professors, 4 assistants, 3 younger assistants, 3 trainiees on internal medicine , and one general practitioner.
27 nurses, among them 3 with high school for nurses.
